At MECS, learning is delivered through two complementary modes, Academic Learning and Industry Learning. While each mode has a different focus, both contribute to industry recognised and nationally accredited qualifications, while also supporting your personal, social, and professional development. Together, they help you build the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed to become a capable, responsible, and employable member of the workforce.

In the Academic Learning mode, you will develop literacy and numeracy skills within the context of the Civil Construction and Mining industries. Rather than studying traditional novels and textbook mathematics problems, your learning will be directly connected to real-world industry applications. Through this mode, you will work towards the Certificate II in General Education for Adults and or the Certificate II in Foundation Skills, contextualised for the Civil Construction industry. Practical components of your learning will be reinforced through participation in the Industry Learning mode.

You will also take part in a range of personal development programs, to build confidence, resilience, independence, and workplace readiness, including:

• Protective Behaviours
• Life skills such as cooking, budgeting, and planning
• Sport and recreation activities
• Personal and social development programs.

In the Industry Learning mode, you will be expected to present and conduct yourself as you would in a real workplace. This includes arriving on time, dressed neatly in full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and demonstrating professionalism at all times. You will be treated as an employee within a Civil Construction company and will be expected to:

• Be punctual and reliable
• Follow workplace procedures
• Listen carefully to instructions
• Ask questions when clarification is needed
• Demonstrate a positive and professional attitude.

Your training will begin with Workplace Health and Safety (WHS), which is essential before progressing to manual tasks and the operation of heavy plant machinery. Through this mode, you will gain practical industry skills, machine operation tickets, and nationally recognised qualifications in both Civil Construction, General Education and Foundation Skills, providing a strong pathway into employment and further training.

The first 8 are delivered by MECS the final 6 units are transferred from Cert II Civil Construction.

Qualifications and Statements of Attainment for nationally recognised training are issued by Australian Training Management (RTO 2431) and Port School (RTO 52718) under third-party arrangements (In both locations, end of units and banner at base of page).
